Regional Major Rankings 2020

The coronavirus pandemic has significantly influenced the whole world. Almost all industries have been affected and esport is not an exception. But considering how deplorable the situation is for tourist companies and airlines, we may conclude that esports has not been severely damaged.

Regional Major Rankings

Due to the current situation, the CS:GO discipline has acquired a series of important changes. They are related to the structure of the industry and have drastically changed its development thrust, at least, for the current year. One of the changes is Regional Major Rankings (RMR-points).

What Is Regional Major Rankings

Regional Major Rankings, aka RMR, are points that are necessary for qualifying for the Major in Rio de Janeiro. It seems to be simple and clear, but the appearance of RMR has affected the competitive CS:GO dramatically.

Regional ranks have changed the fixed system of selection completely. And it is not bad. Now it is going to be even more interesting to watch the competitive CS:GO. The whole season is split into tournaments where the necessary points are played for.

Regional Major Rankings: Principles and Regions

The RMR scoring process is quite simple and effective. The first thing which should be noted in Regional Major Rankings is splitting into regions. This decision kills two birds with one stone: the regions become more competitive and the Tier-2 stage will get a chance to grow and develop.

The whole season is divided into Summer and Fall series. During the series, there will be tournaments where it is possible to gain RMR-points. Depending on the points, the teams that will participate in the Major from their region get selected. Now let us share more details about the regions.

There are six regions in Regional Major Rankings in total. These are:

  • Europe;
  • CIS;
  • North America;
  • South America;
  • Asia;
  • Oceania.

There is an exact number of teams representing every region. This is where a little disadvantage of the system is hidden.

Some regions are less developed, so the competition there is trifling. As for South America and Oceania, the team there play for one slot for four teams. Meanwhile, sixteen teams compete in Europe, in CIS we can see 12 teams and 11 teams represent North America. For example, Asia got only one slot for 9 teams. Not North America has three spots for Legends as well as Europe while CIS received only two. This division of powers is disputable. We hope that the issues will get resolved in the next seasons of Regional Major Rankings.

Why RMR Points Are So Important And Necessary

As it has already been mentioned – the system of the CS:GO tournaments has outlived itself. Getting to a Major for many teams had been decided almost a season before it started. As such, the teams entering Top-8 of the previous Majore did not strain themselves during the season and in any case they got the invite to the next championship.

It is obvious that this approach is quite ineffective and sometimes even harmful for the industry. So Valve used the LoL, Overwatch and Dota2 experiences and decided to change the selection system. This step is going to be fruitful and will most notably help the development of the Tier-2 competitive stage.

Conclusion

Regional Major Rankings is a logical development of the competitive CS:GO. The discipline had to switch to this system long time ago, especially as we can see that this was useful in other disciplines. Of course, there are questionable nuances. This is the number of participants representing a region. Maybe Valve is waiting for the end of the major in Rio to correct the system using the results of the test at the world championship. We are going to find it out soon.

Stay home, love CS, watch CS!
